Sri Aurobindo University Promotes Cleanliness, Hygiene and Safe Healthcare Practices

Clean and orderly hospital and healthcare environments play a critical role in all aspects of safe patient care and effective and responsible teaching. To support this objective, Sri Aurobindo University recently embarked on a campaign that stressed the need to embrace cleanliness, hygiene, and safe disposal of biomedical waste throughout their hospital and academic facilities.

Staff and students alike were encouraged to consider what safe practices meant on a day-to-day basis within their healthcare facilities, which included but was not limited to, cleaning hospital areas (clinical and non-clinical), keeping workspace areas neat and organized, hand washing and maintaining safe practices in handling and disposing of biomedical waste.

Regarding biomedical waste, safe disposal practices should start by safely and appropriately separating biomedical waste at the source of the waste and maintaining these practices thereafter. As responsible biomedical waste practices significantly mitigate hazards and provide a safe and effective healthcare environment, it is crucial that all hospital personnel learn and regularly maintain these practices.

Additionally, hand hygiene and simple cleaning practices significantly reduce the burden of hospital acquired infections. Simple regular clean practices and regular cleaning and sanitizing of work and patient care areas support all those working and being treated in a hospital environment.

For a University that provides an academic and healthcare system under one roof, keeping the place clean goes beyond hiring people to clean. Users of the University and campus facilities, which include students and employees, also have to be active participants and should have a better understanding and awareness of cleanliness. By active involvement, they can appreciate the significance of personal contribution towards keeping the University clean.

There are habits that every health care professional must develop early, like safe and efficient waste management, good personal hygiene, and orderly and organised workspaces. By strengthening a culture around such habits, the University reinforces a culture of safety, discipline, and environmental concern.

Such simple and everyday acts, support a safe and healthy learning and healthcare environment.
