Department of Anesthesiology, SAMC & PGI had its inception in the year 2004 under the guidance Dr. L. C. Soni. Department grew under the able guidance of Dr. Col. M. Kapadia since 2005 with the objective to develop patterns of training in undergraduate medical education. Postgraduate course (MD) was started in the year 2011. Dr. Sadhana Sanwatsarkar succeeded as Head of the Department in the year 2014. Her vision helped in establishing the department at the helm of multidisciplinary team with pain and critical care becoming an integral part of the Department. Presently the Department is headed by Dr. Dipti Saxena.

The department provides protocol based anesthesia, pain and ICU services. It caters to various broad specialties like general surgery, Orthopaedics, Obs& Gynae, ENT, Opthalmology, OMFS , Dentistry and Trauma. Various super specialties like Paediatrics, Neuosurgery, Urology, Oncosurgery, Bariatric, cardiac and IVF are efficiently managed by the Department. Non-operating remote anesthesia services like CT/ MRI, ECT, GI endoscopy, Interventional radiology, Cath Lab are also being covered.

Institute has state of art facilities for laparoscopy and Robotics and is one of the largest centres for Bariatric surgery in Asia. Acute and chronic pain services are actively provided round the clock. Various pain modalities are also covered, with department having its Radio frequency ablation machine (Coolief).

At present, Anesthesia department intakes 16 PG’s per year and is NMC recognized. The Department of Anesthesiology at SAMC & PGI strives to provide outstanding patient care and the finest education for medical students and residents, with its team of accomplished faculty and world-class infrastructure.
